Board Chair, Steve McKernan served as the CEO for UNM Hospitals for 37 years before his retirement in 2017. Even after his retirement, remains a consultant to UNM Hospital. During his tenure, Mr. McKernan worked with the communities UNM Hospitals serves including the Native American communities throughout Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, He assisted in creating a network of community-based clinics while at UNM. Stephen served on numerous Boards and Professional Healthcare Associations including the Board for America’s Essential Hospitals, a national Board; and the New Mexico Hospital Association.

Board Vice Chair, Gayle Dine’Chacon, MD is a family medicine physician and enrolled member of the Navajo Nation. She is Professor Emerita of the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine where she founded and directed the Center for Native American Health (CNAH. She served as Surgeon General for the Navajo Nation and is recognized as one of New Mexico’s Women of Influence. She has provided health care in eastern Navajo, Pueblos of Sandia and Jemez, Albuquerque Indian Health Service and for the adolescent population at the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center. She served as the Executive Director for the Native American Budget and Policy Institute (NABPI) at UNM Center for Social Policy which analyzes research and budget policies in areas of health, education and environmental justice for native children, families, and communities. She has served on the Laguna Healthcare Corporation Board of Directors for 8 years. |
